Walk through the holy rocks of the Meteora…
A good way to admire the Holy Meteora is a mystical walk through its holy rocks viewing the Monasteries from a different angle.
The footpaths have a long tradition as for many hundreds of years they were the only form of roads leading to the monasteries. You can find different forms of human modifications along the paths either with carved stairs etc. or wooden stairs helping the transportation of equipment and everyday needs.
Characterization of the foot paths
You can find tracts that are for beginners and others which are for more advanced walkers. This is because over the years many rocks have fallen causing certain paths to be very difficult. To help the visitor there exists relief maps showing what is safe and what is more challenging.
Useful advice!
- The best season for walking at the Holy Meteora is Spring and Autumn. If you are walking in the Summer, you will need to have a lot of water with you. You should also avoid walking in the heat of the day (11.00 – 4.00 pm). In the Winter you should also avoid areas that are very wet and slippery.
- You should wear shoes that are correct for such sports.
- Please respect the holiness of the site and maintain the proper behavior.
- Please keep the area clean of all forms of rubbish.
