Holy Monastery of Saint George at Avra
Asscending the ”Old Koperna”, which was orginally the beginning of the village Avra, St. George’s church stands like a fortress, reminding us of the existence of people in this area and especially the passage of St. Kosmas Aitolos through this area.
The orthodox church of St. George was recently restored by Archimandrite Dorotheos Tzevelekas, with the help of many believers.
It is recorded that St. Kosmas Aitolos passed through Avra and preached to the people at the area where is now built the monastery.
It is worth noting that beside the church have been built rooms for hospitality as well as ”cells” for the monks.
The monastery of St. George at Avra celebrates two times a year:
the first on its name day (23 April) and
second on the celebration day of St. Kosmas Aitolos (24 August).
